September - Growth Mindset

Starting April 2021 and lasting for one year, each month the Scappoose Public Library will spotlight a new social-emotional skill for early learners. From empathy to responsibility to resiliency, we'll focus on some most important skills for your little one to practice. We'll have books to read together, activities for kids to explore, and information for parents. Thank you to the NW Early Learning Hub for a generous grant which will help fund this endeavor! In September we're learning about having a Growth Mindset.

September is for exploring a Growth Mindset

Engage with your child about Growth Mindset

  • When you praise your child be mindful of your word choices. Telling a child they are "smart" feels predetermined, whereas praising their effort and hard work focuses on things they control.
  • If your child sees someone excelling at something take a moment to talk about what came before this moment. For example, if they are watching their favorite athlete remind them that the player has spent thousands of hours practicing their sport.
  • Share examples of growth mindset from your own life. Talk about a time you failed at something and what you learned from the situation. Notice when something you're attempting doesn't work out on the first try and talk through your next actions with your child.
