Tips & Hints

Local obituaries can be found in either The Chronicle or The Spotlight newspapers. Issues of The Chronicle dating up to 1922 are available online through the University of Oregon's Oregon Digital Newspaper Program at  http://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/search/pages/.

Other newspapers available on this website are:
The Columbia Register (Houlton) 1904-1906
The Columbian (St. Helens) 1882-03-10—1886-02-041904-04-29—1906-06-01
The Oregon Mist (St. Helens) 1891-08-07—1913-02-14
St. Helens Mist (St. Helens) 1913-01-02—1921-04-22

Issues of The Chronicle from 1923 and later are microfilmed by St. Helens Public Library and are available for public use on location at that library. Call (503) 397-4544 for more information.

Oregon obituaries can be found in The Oregonian newspaper. Both Multnomah County Public Library and the Knight Library (at the University of Oregon) microfilm these newspapers. If you know the date your family member's obituary appeared in print, Scappoose Public Library can usually borrow these microfilm canisters through our inter-library loan program.

Books on genealogy can be found in both the Reference and Adult Nonfiction sections of our library. Search within the 929 subject headings or ask a library staff member for assistance.

The Lower Columbia County Genealogical Society has put out a brochure entitled Columbia County, Oregon Ancestors - Where to Find Them. This has helpful lists of where to find information about local people who lived in Cowlitz County, Washington and Columbia County, Oregon. The Society also provides genealogical research assistance to visitors to the Longview Public Library each Wednesday from 1-3 p.m.
